Average Water Consumption

According to the Data360 web site (www.data360.org), the U.S. has the highest average water usage per person per day at about 575 liters (see the chart below). At 3.79 liters per US gallon, that’s 575 liters per person per day divided by 3.79 liters per gallon or about 152 US gallons per person per day. The second highest consumer is Australia followed by Italy, Japan, and Mexico in that order.

The U.S. Geologic Survey (USGS, https://water.usgs.gov/edu/qa-home-percapita.html) tells us that the average personal water use at home is about 80-100 gallon per person per day with the largest usage of household water going to flush the toilet followed by taking showers and baths.

Here in Arizona, water is a precious commodity. Our average annual rainfall is only about 8 inches occurring in only 36 days per year with precipitation while the US average annual rainfall logs in at around 30 inches of precipitation.

According to our latest utility bill from the City of Prescott
,
we used 2150 gallons of water in 27 days for an average usage per person per day at just under 40 gallons (2150 divided by 27 equals 79.6 gallons per day, then divided by 2 people equals 39.8). We do have low-flush toilets and a hot water recirculating system installed in our house that helps save water with showers, baths, and laundry. We feel like we’re doing our share to conserve. How about you?
