Veterans Day

November 11th of each year was made a national holiday by a Congressional Act in 1938 and was called Armistice Day to commemorate the end of World War I. In 1954, Congress approved changing the word ‘Armistice’ to the word ‘Veterans’ to celebrate all veterans of the United States Armed Forces, and it has been called Veterans Day ever since.

In 1971 in accordance with the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday of October. In 1978, it was moved back to its original celebration on November 11.

The original idea for Armistice Day was put forth by U. S. President Woodrow Wilson on November 11, 1919. In his message to the American people about the significance of the day, he wrote, in part, "To us in America the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service, and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of nations". His message is no less appropriate for today than it was in 1919.

To all of our veterans, we say, with grateful hearts, "THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE."
