Square of a Number
When we square a number or find the square of a number, we multiply the number by itself.
For example, the square of 2 is 4; that is, we multiply 2 by itself so that 2 x 2 = 4. To find the square of 25, we multiply 25 by itself so that 25 x 25 = 625. To square 1.5, we multiply 1.5 times itself so that 1.5 x 1.5 = 2.25. And so on.
Why is multiplying a number by itself called squaring the number? Since the area of a rectangle is obtained by multiplying its length times its width, and since a square is a special case of a rectangle whose length and width are the same, it follows that multiplying a number by itself is akin to finding the area of a geometric figure called a square, and so we say that multiplying a number by itself is squaring the number or finding the square of the number.
