Dame Vera Lynn |

British singer Vera Lynn was born on this day (March 20) in 1917. She passed away on June 18, 2020 at 103 years of age. So, just who the heck is/was Vera Lynn anyway, you might ask? Its unlikely that the name Vera Lynn has meaning to anyone except those old folks like me who were born prior to and lived through and after the Second World War (WWII). But to those of my vintage, her name is remembered, yes, perhaps even revered, as someone who had a significant impact on the morale of the British people during the war. She could rightly be considered a heroine of WWII. Many in the UK consider her a national treasure. One of the best (in my view) summaries of Vera Lynn, of who she was and of her impact on the war effort in Great Britain, which bore such a heavy part of the toll on the free world prior to and during WWII, is found in her obituary published in the British daily newspaper "The Guardian" and available to read on the Internet at "The Guardian": Vera Lynn Obituary. (Click on "Ill do it later" if asked to register.) During the war, Lynns two best-loved songs were "Well Meet Again" and "The White Cliffs of Dover". Considering the conditions that existed in Great Britain at the time, its easy to understand why these songs would be especially nostalgic and meaningful to the British people. After the war, Lynns popularity grew, especially in the United States, and in 1952 she topped the charts of America's Hit Parade with her recording of "Auf Wiedersehn Sweetheart". "The Anniversary Waltz" was another of her popular songs in the US. You can listen to Vera Lynns renditions of the songs by using the following links, courtesy of YouTube. "Auf Wiedersehn Sweetheart"
