With the Thanksgiving holiday behind us, we now turn our attention to preparations for the Christmas season when we focus on the birth of Jesus, our Savior, and all that means for us as believers.
At our church in Prescott, AZ, where I play in the church orchestra, we have started rehearsals for our annual Christmas musical. This year, we will have three presentations on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, December 15, 16, and 17. For me, some of the songs on our program are familiar while others are new, ones that I have neither sung nor played before. There is one song, however, that is one of my most favorite Christmas songs.
"Wonderful Name" is a relatively new song with words and music by Rodger Strader (Copyright 1978). I heard the song for the first time at a Christmas concert by the Azusa Pacific University (APU) Choir and Orchestra. Subsequently, the choir at our church (Rose Drive Friends Church (RDFC) in Yorba Linda, CA) sang it as well and it quickly became one of my favorites.
Tears invariably fill my eyes and I struggle to maintain my composure when we rehearse this song because it brings back memories of opportunities we (Mary Jane and I) had to minister by singing with the RDFC choir for Christmas Eve services. My mind quickly goes to the 26 years we spent as members of the RDFC choir. They were without a doubt some of the most memorable and meaningful years of our lives. Prominent in my memories of RDFC are the many (100 or more?) Christmas Eve services we sang at, sometimes 4 or 5 in one day, singing well-known and favorite Christmas carols and other Christmas songs.
