"Besame Mucho"
(Kiss Me a Lot)

"Besame Mucho", translated from Spanish to English as "Kiss Me a Lot", is one of the most recorded songs of the twentieth century. It has been recognized as the most recorded song in Spanish of all time. The song has been translated into more than twenty languages. Originally written and recorded in Spanish, it was recorded in English and introduced onto the American music scene by Nat "King" Cole in 1944, subsequently being interpreted and recorded around the world by numerous other well-known artists like Xavier Cugat and his orchestra, Vera Lynn (British singer popular during the WWII period), Andrea Bocelli, Ray Conniff and his orchestra, Canadian pianist-vocalist Dianna Krall, to name just a few of many others.

Besame Mucho, arguably the best-known of many songs written by Consuelo Velazquez, was written by Consuelo when she was still a teenager and had not yet been kissed, having been brought up to believe that kissing was a sin. Based on her date of birth (August 25, 1916) and the supposition that the song was written while she was still a teenager, the song would have been written sometime in the mid-1930’s.

Consuelo started showing an aptitude for music when she was only four years old and started studying piano at age six. She started composing popular music following her first public concert and composed music for a number of movies. She also worked as a movie actress, appearing in several movies. Velazquez died in January of 2005 at the age of eighty-eight.

My own personal favorite rendition of the song is the instrumental version by Bert Kaempfert and his orchestra. Click here to hear it on YouTube.

Nat ‘King’ Cole’s English translation of the lyrics is given below. Listen to his rendition of Besame Mucho on YouTube by clicking here.

Bésame, bésame mucho
Each time I cling to your kiss, I hear music divine
Bésame mucho
Hold me my darling and say that you'll always be mine

This joy is something new
My arms enfolding you
Never knew this thrill before

Whoever thought I'd be
Holding you close to me
Whispering, it's you I adore

Dearest one
If you should leave me
Each little dream would take wing and my life would be through

Bésame mucho
Love me forever and make all my dreams come true
Bésame mucho
Bésame mucho

This joy is something new
My arms enfolding you
Never knew this thrill before

Whoever thought I'd be
Holding you close to me
Whispering, it's you I adore

Dearest one
If you should leave me
Each little dream would take wing and my life would be through

Bésame mucho
Love me forever and make all my dreams come true

Bésame mucho

Bésame mucho
