November 10, 1938 One of America’s favorite patriotic songs was introduced to the public on this date in 1938. "God Bless America" was sung by Kate Smith on her Armistice Day radio program. Originally written by Irving Berlin in 1918 while he was serving in the US Army during World War I, Berlin revised the lyrics to fit the circumstances that existed in pre-World War II 1938. Armistice Day/Veterans Day A November 11 holiday was proposed in May 1919 to commemorate the signing of an armistice agreement that ended World War I in 1918. The holiday was called Armistice Day and was recognized and celebrated by the United States and other countries around the world.
